Get Necessary Information about the Contractor

Ask for needed data about things like the length of his experience in the given field, references from previous clients, contractor’s credentials, and exact quotation of estimated expenses.

Length of Experience

Be very cautious when hiring a new contractor as you will be at risk of getting one that may or may not finish the job after getting your money. Ask how long has he/she been in the business and get necessary references. It is good to give chances to new contractors and help them with their business, but you should also take some caution for yourself.  Also observe if the contractor is professional; exhibiting values of punctuality and being professional on the phone to name a few.

Check References

No matter how new the contractor is with this filed, it’s always advisable to check for references. Even a new contractor can have at least one or two references that they can give to you. Contact these previous clients and ask for feedback on the previous job done. If possible, visit and check the paint job done yourself.

Contractor’s Credentials

Get contractor’s credentials like a license bond and insurance for the job to be done. A professional contractor sees to it that he/she has a license bond. He/she is willing to pay a certain amount of money in order to show the quality of work that he/she can provide.

Although a license bond is not needed in some countries, it is still good to check if the contractor has one and be careful when considering one without it.

Also check if he/she can provide you with insurance for the paint job. This also shows how he/she values not only the quality that he can provide but also his relationship with his clients. Thus seeing to it that he can have well references-to-be in the future.

Quotation

A good contractor should be able to provide you with an estimated quotation of expenses; materials, products, labor to be used. He/she should also be willing to have you accompany him/her when purchasing the materials to be used or to have them delivered straight to your house instead.

There are various kinds of factors to be considered when a contractor gives you his/her estimation of expenses. Such may be based on size of the surface, profit, fees and taxes, materials, hourly rate or time and rate.

Size

One of the most common bases of a contractor’s quotation is the size of the surface to be painted on. They measure and identify the square footage and give you the rate based on the measurements.

Another common one is the profit that they can obtain from the painting job. They need to get a percentage from the whole rate given to keep their business going. Of course bigger companies will need to give you a higher rate as they will have more factors to consider. They will provide you with a bigger size of workers, which means a faster job. A self-employed contractor may also hire more help which can affect the rate that he/she will give you.

Fees and Taxes

Fees and taxes can also add to the expenses of the contractor. Such could include taxes that the territory will require from the contractor or his/her company, insurance, and license bonds of the company or contractor if he/she is licensed.

Painting Materials

Materials to be used can greatly affect the rate that a contractor will provide. This can include pre-painting and painting materials to be used. Pre-painting materials may include materials to be used for cleaning the surface like sanding or water blasting, materials for caulking and sealing and things to be used for covering and protecting furniture, floors, and other objects in the house.

Hourly rate technique is usually not chosen by contractors and clients as well as this means that the job may be finished for longer periods of time. However, Time and rate technique is the more common way to go. With this technique, the contractor determines the length of time that they would need to finish the job and the rate that they can give depending on this.

Some things like employees’ salaries (for bigger companies), administrative expenses, transportation expenses (gas, car rental, fare) and marketing expenses should also be considered in a contractor’s quotation.

We will help move the furniture to the center of the room, then use plastic drop sheet to protect them. If the furniture is too heavy, we will ask the owners to help take the items inside, so as to reduce weight of furniture in order for us to move it. We will also protect the furniture that are not movable with the plastic drop sheet too.
